Stressed about screening results? Let's make the maths painless. In this guide you'll learn how to calculate UNILAG aggregate score, plus the UI and OAU formulas, step by step. We'll break down post UTME screening points, show how WAEC grading for aggregate works, and help you calculate university aggregate scores without guessing. Every formula below is out of 100.
Short version: UNILAG = JAMB÷8 + Post-UTME(/30) + O'Level. UI = JAMB÷8 + Post-UTME÷2. OAU = JAMB÷8 + Post-UTME(/40) + O'Level.
The 3 Formulas at a Glance
Every school builds its aggregate from the same three ingredients: your JAMB score, your post UTME screening points, and sometimes your O'Level grades. Only the weighting changes.
| School | JAMB | Post-UTME | O'Level | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UNILAG | ÷ 8 (max 50) | Out of 30 | Best 5 (max 20) | 100 |
| UI | ÷ 8 (max 50) | ÷ 2 (max 50) | Not added | 100 |
| OAU | ÷ 8 (max 50) | Out of 40 | Best 5 (max 10) | 100 |
Notice the pattern: JAMB is always worth up to 50, because you divide by 8 (400 ÷ 8 = 50). The rest is decided by the school.
How to Calculate UNILAG Aggregate Score (50:30:20)
UNILAG splits the 100 marks three ways: 50 for JAMB, 30 for screening, and 20 for O'Level.
Step 1: Convert your JAMB score
Divide by 8. A JAMB score of 280 becomes 35.
Step 2: Add your post UTME screening points
Your screening score is already on the 30-mark scale. Say you got 22 out of 30. Keep it at 22.
Step 3: Convert your O'Level grades
Pick your best 5 core subjects and use this table:
| WAEC Grade | UNILAG Points |
|---|---|
| A1 | 4.0 |
| B2 | 3.6 |
| B3 | 3.2 |
| C4 | 2.8 |
| C5 | 2.4 |
| C6 | 2.0 |
| D7, E8, F9 | 0 |
Worked example: UNILAG
JAMB 280, Post-UTME 22/30, O'Level grades A1, B2, B3, B3, C4:
| Part | Working | Points |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB | 280 ÷ 8 | 35.00 |
| Post-UTME | 22 out of 30 | 22.00 |
| O'Level (best 5) | 4.0 + 3.6 + 3.2 + 3.2 + 2.8 | 16.80 |
| Aggregate | 73.80 / 100 |

UI Aggregate: The 50:50 Formula
The University of Ibadan keeps it simple. Two parts, each worth 50.
Important: At UI, your O'Level grades are only a baseline check. You still need the required credits to be eligible, but your WAEC grades do not add any points to your aggregate.
Worked example: UI
JAMB 280, Post-UTME 68/100:
| Part | Working | Points |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB | 280 ÷ 8 | 35.00 |
| Post-UTME | 68 ÷ 2 | 34.00 |
| O'Level | Baseline check only | 0.00 |
| Aggregate | 69.00 / 100 |
OAU Aggregate: The 50:40:10 Formula
Obafemi Awolowo University gives the screening exercise the biggest slice (40) and O'Level the smallest (10).
OAU O'Level points table
| WAEC Grade | OAU Points |
|---|---|
| A1 | 2.0 |
| B2 | 1.8 |
| B3 | 1.6 |
| C4 | 1.4 |
| C5 | 1.2 |
| C6 | 1.0 |
| D7, E8, F9 | 0 |
Worked example: OAU
JAMB 280, Post-UTME 30/40, O'Level grades A1, B2, B3, C4, C5:
| Part | Working | Points |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB | 280 ÷ 8 | 35.00 |
| Post-UTME | 30 out of 40 | 30.00 |
| O'Level (best 5) | 2.0 + 1.8 + 1.6 + 1.4 + 1.2 | 8.00 |
| Aggregate | 73.00 / 100 |
WAEC Grading for Aggregate: UNILAG vs OAU
This is where students slip. WAEC grading for aggregate uses the same grades at UNILAG and OAU, but each grade is worth a different number of points.
| WAEC Grade | UNILAG Points | OAU Points |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 4.0 | 2.0 |
| B2 | 3.6 | 1.8 |
| B3 | 3.2 | 1.6 |
| C4 | 2.8 | 1.4 |
| C5 | 2.4 | 1.2 |
| C6 | 2.0 | 1.0 |
| D7, E8, F9 | 0 | 0 |
Only your best 5 core subjects count, and English and Maths should be among them where the course requires it. At UI, none of this applies.

Same Student, Three Schools
Here's the same student (JAMB 280, strong O'Level) run through each formula. Different schools, different totals:
| School | Working | Aggregate |
|---|---|---|
| UNILAG | 35 + 22 + 16.8 | 73.80 |
| UI | 35 + 34 | 69.00 |
| OAU | 35 + 30 + 8.0 | 73.00 |
Same student, three formulas, three different totals. That's why you should never compare scores across schools.
Mistakes When You Calculate University Aggregate by Hand
When you calculate university aggregate scores by hand, one wrong divide ruins the result:
- Using all 8 subjects. UNILAG and OAU count your best 5 core subjects only.
- Dividing Post-UTME by the wrong number. UI halves it. UNILAG and OAU use it on their own scale (30 and 40).
- Adding O'Level points at UI. UI uses WAEC as a baseline check only.
- Mixing up the OAU and UNILAG grade tables. A1 is worth 4.0 at UNILAG but 2.0 at OAU.
- Forgetting JAMB ÷ 8. A 280 is worth 35, not 280.
- Rounding too early. Keep the decimals until the final total.
Always verify: Schools can change their weighting and screening rules between admission cycles. Confirm the current formula on your target school's official admission portal.
Post-UTME Aggregate: Frequently Asked Questions
-
Use: (JAMB ÷ 8) + Post-UTME score (out of 30) + O'Level points. O'Level points come from your best 5 core subjects: A1 = 4.0, B2 = 3.6, B3 = 3.2, C4 = 2.8, C5 = 2.4, C6 = 2.0. The total is out of 100.
-
Use: (JAMB ÷ 8) + (Post-UTME ÷ 2). Your O'Level grades are only a baseline eligibility check and do not add points to the aggregate. The total is out of 100.
-
Use: (JAMB ÷ 8) + Post-UTME score (out of 40) + O'Level points. O'Level points come from your best 5 core subjects: A1 = 2.0, B2 = 1.8, B3 = 1.6, C4 = 1.4, C5 = 1.2, C6 = 1.0. The total is out of 100.

At UNILAG and OAU, yes: your best 5 WAEC grades are converted into points. At UI, no: WAEC is only checked for eligibility and adds nothing to your aggregate.
-
Post UTME screening points are the marks you earn in your university's screening exercise. Each school scales them differently: out of 30 at UNILAG, out of 40 at OAU, and converted from 100 to 50 at UI.
-
They earn zero O'Level points in the UNILAG and OAU formulas, and they can also make you ineligible if they leave you short of the required credits.
